XL Culinary Ginger Plant (zingiber officinale)

GROW YOUR OWN – Robust flavor and a deep fragrant aroma that fills the air as you brush past the plant, is reason enough to grow this lovely ginger. Easy to grow, Officinale almost spends more energy growing below ground than above. Petite canes of long thin deep green leaves grow in a community fashion, 2 to 3 feet in height. The rhizome is used as food that when dried is about twice as pungent as the fresh root. The newer young rhizomes are peeled and eaten raw in salads, pickled, or cooked in syrup. The young, slightly spicy leaves and young shoots can be eaten as a potherb or pureed and used in sauces and dips. The leaves can also be used to wrap food and the young inflorescence can be eaten raw. Essential oil from the root is used in flavoring essences.
