Mundu Rata Tree (garcinia dulcis)

Tangy, round globe-shaped fruit with a thin skin in pale powdery yellow hang from the tree and can be eaten upon ripening. The fruit texture has been compared to a smooth buttery consistency and is frequently used pickled or preserved. A native tree of the Philippines, this mid-sized, evergreen maxes out around 40 feet tall with a shorter trunk than crown. The interior sap or latex is frequently used as a brown dye. Rata makes a superior specimen tree in the southern edible garden.
